Welcome To Year 1!
The children have been settling into their new classrooms well, they are very excited to be back and catch up with their friends. This term our topic is 'We are wonderful,' we will be taking a closer look at our local area, learning about our heroes and ourselves by drawing self portraits! We look forward to working with you over the year and we are excited to provide fun, motivating and engaging lessons for our children! More details on planning to follow soon...
Autumn 1
English
We have been reading 'The Naughty Bus' by Jan Oke. We have enjoyed writing adjectives to describe the bus, a letter to the bus, a diary entry and we have retold the story!
One day, we arrived into a messy classroom, we realised it was the naughty bus!
Maths:
We have been busy ordering and comparing numbers up to ten and using part whole models to help with our number bond to ten learning!
Science:
We have become weather watchers! We are thoroughly enjoying learning all about the seasons and the changes in the weather. We have been keeping a close eye on the weather, completing a weather chart every morning to compare the different types of weather.
RE:
Currently, we are learning about the domestic church and talking about our family and Jesus's family. We are understanding that Jesus is part of our family, because he shows us love.
Art:
We have been learning about the artist Pablo Picasso and painting abstract portraits in the style of Picasso. We have also enjoyed drawing self portraits!
BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Visit
We were very lucky to have the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra visit us to perform The Gingerbread Man. The children thoroughly enjoyed it!
Autumn 2
To start our topic “let’s celebrate” we had a bonfire in our garden with Gardener Luke, we toasted marshmallows and talked about Guy Fawkes and bonfire night.
Spring 1
A scientific visit from united utilities! The children loved learning about how to look after our drains and took part in some fun experiments !
Design and Technology
We put our fashion designing hats on and explored different materials such as leather, denim, fur and felt. After some exploration we designed luxurious robes for The Three Kings in celebration of epiphany.
English and Reading
We started off the new year with POETRY! We recited our favourite poems and learnt new ones from the book Caterpillar Cake by Matt Goodfellow. We had so much fun exploring Matt's poems and it inspired us to come up with our own versions. Matt Goodfellow came to our school and we had a workshop with him, whereby we wrote a class poem!
Also this term, we had a visit from a lost penguin! We were intrigued and thought of lots of questions for the penguin. Later we discovered the penguin was not lost he was lonely! Which reminded us of the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. We read the story and acted out parts of the story to help us retell it.
