Our Reading Curriculum

At the Divine Mercy, we believe Reading is at the heart of everything we do.

We have designed and developed our Reading curriculum to align with our Writing curriculum.

Each half-term (in Years 2 - 6) year groups look at texts in both Reading and Writing which share a similar theme to the Writing Roots. An example of these themes would be: friendship and kindness; nature and conservation; dreams and curiosity.

The Reading curriculum uses Literary Leaves which is designed to grow literary knowledge. It provides a range of sequenced activities taking children through whole books to teach reading comprehension and create critical readers. Literary Leaves use novels, poetry collections and high-quality, non-fiction books.

Children take part in whole class reading lessons three times a week from Years 2 - 6.

The Literary Leaf book may also be used as a class read, where children are read to daily by the class teacher.

In EYFS and Y1, pupils also take part in whole class reading lessons using a wide range of high-quality texts, focusing on developing their vocabulary and their ability to retrieve information from the book they have read.
